Old Man's Child second album, "The Pagan Prosperity", was initially released in 1997 and was their first album for Century Media Records, with whom the band would remain for their career. With the black metal scene overcrowding in the late 1990s, the band moved away from their Dimmu Borgir/Emperor-inspired roots and into something new and vital. A more measured pace allowed the band to find some more catchiness and hooks in their material, making for one extremely refreshing and listenable album from start to finish.

Genre defining album. THIS is what avantgarde is. Not strictly in it's form, but in its transgression of expectations and pretense. This one album is a whole genre encapsulated. How many people walked into this expecting a second wave black metal album and had their expectations demolished gloriously? I can't formally retract the erroneous 2.0 I gave this back in 2018, but I can say that, five years on, I've come around to this record in a big way. Quality death metal with great atmosphere without being "atmospheric" (read: boring) metal. Diabolus in Muzaka
