With their masterpiece "Quintessence", BORKNAGAR took a step ahead and even went to new extremes. The dark mystique of Borknagar's brand of epic metal has managed to lift its extremities to a more sophisticated and melodic sound. Elements of Nordic folklore and an almost sci-fi feeling fit perfectly alongside their raging black metal blasts.

BORKNAGAR´s frontman I.C.S. Vortex (who also plays bass in Dimmu Borgir) is #6 of „Best Metal Vocalists“ in the British Terrorizer´s April 2000 issue. BORKNAGAR´s following has constantly grown with the release of 3 albums and continuous touring (e.g. with Cradle Of Filth, Napalm Death, Emperor, Peccatum, Witchery and Divine Empire).

"Quintessence" was recorded in Sweden's famous Abyss studios with Hypocrisy-Drummer Lars Szöke engineering and Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Edge Of Sanity etc. ) being responsible for the crushing mix. Indeed, it works as the "Quintessence" of their very individual and unique musical vision...

Genre defining album. THIS is what avantgarde is. Not strictly in it's form, but in its transgression of expectations and pretense. This one album is a whole genre encapsulated. How many people walked into this expecting a second wave black metal album and had their expectations demolished gloriously? The album has a playful roguishness to it, where you pay for admission to a circus whose clowns entertain themselves at your expense, and you love every minute of it. Archmage Orladin
