It is quite likely that Ryker’s (without a ‘the‘, comes from RYKER’S ISLAND) mean quite a bit to every Hardcore-maniac around. After playing a record-breaking number of gigs all over the globe (which also brought the boys to the Mecca of hardcore, otherwise known as New York City), they bundled up their live-energy in 18 new songs that can easily face the critical ear of the dedicated (not to mention notoriously outspoken) Ryker’s following. Taking a two-year break from work in the studio obviously had a positive, refreshing effect on their motivation to work on their new masterpiece. Even old fans will be surprised by the vital freshness of Life’s A Gamble... So Is Death, because Ryker’s managed the great feat of uniting monumentally heavy riffs, relentless power and uniqueness to their violent brand of music—call it hardcore for the new millennium. A further constant is producer Andy Classen, who works as a fifth member when it comes to their notorious studio-sessions in Stage One Studio (nestled in the innocent village Bühne, an area so sparsely populated that the streets bear no names). As usual, Andy was responsible for the rich sound of Life’s A Gamble... So Is Death. In addition to 40+ minutes of original material, Ryker’s added their own unique interpretations of songs from icons such as Hirax (“Bombs Of Death”), Gerry And The Pacemakers (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”) and Alone In The Crowd (“When Tigers Fight”, featuring numerous guest-vocalists). Therefore, Life’s A Gamble... So Is Death is 100% Ryker’s-Hardcore, a phrase so often used by fans and critics that it’s practically been established as a registered trademark.
