For two years, NEVERMORE’s superbly crafted and complicated versatility has been brooding. Now we are once again invited into the band’s dark subconscious with 2003’s Enemies Of Reality. Warrel Dane’s visceral clarion calls lead the band to more limitless heights armed with the indestructible backbone of drummer Van Williams and bassist Jim Sheppard while venom, foreboding, and poignant despair continue to be born from the hands of Jeff Loomis within the confines of one song.

The title track pummels you with its ferocity and cerebral aggression; “Never Purify” is a forlorn lament of the dismal reality we’ve surrounded ourselves in; and the emotionally evocative “Who Decides” exudes the insightfully mature observations through hindsight of a life lived in extremes. It’s hard to point out any highlights on an all-killer-no-filler album like this, but a sign of their maturation is obvious within songs like the standout ballad “Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday”. There are few bands that are able to write a classic rock ballad in such an intense modern way without using any clichés.

While the original mix by Kelly Gray was much-maligned upon its release, the band collaborated with producer Andy Sneap (Judas Priest) to fully remix the record into the version presented here.

A truly epic saga told in clean vocals and death growls, wrapped up in death, black, power, and doom metal. There are no defaults here: genres and styles are just tools used to convey the desired mood, and Khemmis interchanges them effortlessly and with purpose. Somehow, it’s incredibly cohesive and compelling. Plus, the artwork is absolutely SICK. 11/10 buying a shirt, or maybe a dozen.
