Archmage Orladin Hard to pick a favorite, since the album is absolutely loaded with genuinely great songs. Easily Borknagar's best album (Quintessence is second, followed by Urd/Winter Thrice). Truly avant-garde, with not much else sounding like this. It's also quite an accessible album, and I've had people over the years that don't generally like metal say "oh what is this, it's cool/nice?". Favorite track: The Stellar Dome.

Genre defining album. THIS is what avantgarde is. Not strictly in it's form, but in its transgression of expectations and pretense. This one album is a whole genre encapsulated. How many people walked into this expecting a second wave black metal album and had their expectations demolished gloriously? The album has a playful roguishness to it, where you pay for admission to a circus whose clowns entertain themselves at your expense, and you love every minute of it. Archmage Orladin
