sachavonkarl74 Having been a fan of Vittra but especially Diabolical (the re-issued and remastered versions sound just perfect), I wanted to check out this 2020 album from legendary Naglfar. I listen to it with my Marshall Major IV and it sounds ok, loud enough, and clear, though I see why some people complained about muddy prod. Not me, get good headsets and you'll enjoy this fully. Not innovative, it's good old Naglfar as I loved it, so I am good with it. Favorite track: Vortex Of Negativity.

Formed in 1992, Umeå, Sweden’s black metal nihilists NAGLFAR were quite prolific at the front of their existence. Between their classic 1995 debut “Vittra,” and 2012’s “Téras”, NAGLFAR unfurled four other full lengths with no more than five years between each one. It has been a long eight year stretch between releases for NAGLFAR, but like any slumbering beast, NAGLFAR have returned ferocious and hungry with their seventh full length album “Cerecloth”. Recorded and mixed by NAGLFAR guitarist Marcus Norman at Wolf’s Lair Studio, and mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound, the underlying musical and lyrical themes of “Cerecloth” were succinctly described by guitarist Andreas Nilsson: “The usual death and destruction.”

Judging from Andreas’ curt description, and the grim cover art from Kristian Wåhlin, certain death is exactly what “Cerecloth” provides. The opening track drops like a bloodthirsty guillotine. It is a violent beginning, and a fitting introduction to the subsequent eight tracks. Like a poisonous spider meticulously weaving its web, there is beauty and elegance to “Cerecloth”’s black metal malevolence. But, like the aforementioned venomous arachnid, in “Cerecloth” there is also an element of spine-tingling terror and weighted dread. The melodious underpinning in tracks like “Horns” and “Like Poison For The Soul” could almost be angelic if it weren't for their slashing and sneering black metal. Tracks like “The Dagger In Creation” and “A Sanguine Tide Unleashed” rip with an audio attack that is unrelenting and frigidly cold.

NAGLFAR also has the means to reign in their fury with a slower sound on a few tracks. “Cry of the Serafim” lurches and lumbers like some grotesque, ethereal H.P. Lovecraft creature, and “Necronaut” has a crawling, yet triumphant dirge. Altogether, fast or slow, “Cerecloth”’s black metal barrage takes zero prisoners.

Mikolaj is a real multi-talent in bass as well as guitar as well as vocals and "Darkside" Maciej's drumming is a well-calibrated 100th-of-seconds-clockwork. Not for nothing is Mgla considered as a standard for a lot of other blacker-than-black metal bands. I hope to see this band live once..... grote_smurf

The "Cult..." is UADA's sophomore album, and among all, the one I largely prefer. The Vocal performance, to start with, is truly outstanding, and while I really liked their debut album, this one is more varied, and overall is technically superior to anything else I've heard from UADA. Fast, aggressive, but with enchanting melodies to break in between, à la Dissection. Highly recommended! sachavonkarl74

Very late to the party, but for several years I've found melodic black metal all too similar and all albums sounding like Dissection, etc... HOWEVER, not only I am back into it but UADA is still a layer of complexity above the main baseline and this is an old album worth having, that's a basic milestone in UADA's discography and I felt it needed to be part of my BC collection. sachavonkarl74

I must have read somewhere that this album from Urgehal was "A timeless, untouchable masterpiece that transcends the genre of black metal in any era". I would have to agree and there is not much more to add. It is Urgehal Opus Magnum. More oppressing darkness than ever !! sachavonkarl74
