about

In the beginning there were mountains…

In 1994, the Norwegian guitarist Øystein G. Brun (who previously released two albums with the Death Metal band Molested) started to work on a new musical vision and move forwards with an own new project, where he wrote all the music and the lyrics. Having always been fond of melodious atmospherics, he recruited like-minded musicians from Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Arcturus, Immortal and Ulver with the goal of rupturing the peripheries of what was then deemed “traditional” Black Metal. Thus, the remarkable and sophisticated anomaly that is BORKNAGAR was born, considered an "all-star" gathering playing majestic epic metal ever since.

Without initially even putting out any form of demo, BORKNAGAR’s first and by now “cult” self-titled album was recorded at Bergen’s legendary Grieghallen Studios for the underground label Malicious Records from Germany, who released it in 1996. Next to Øystein G. Brun, “Borknagar” featured the likes of Garm (Ulver, ex Arcturus) doing the vocals, drummer Grim (ex-Immortal, Gorgoroth and Ancient), Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) on keyboards and bassist Infernus (who played in Gorgoroth). The overall press reaction was extremely positive, with media and fans alike praising the highly original and fresh approach of the group.

Fast forward 25 years, in which BORKNAGAR has so far released a total of 11 albums in various, progressing line-up constellations and performed live-shows all over the world. Now, in order to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of “Borknagar” as well as finally curate and endorse a proper re-issue via longtime label partners Century Media Records, Øystein G. Brun has worked tirelessly in coming up with a deluxe album edition for everyone interested in finding out about the beginning of BORKNAGAR’s journey.

Next to a careful remaster of the 10 album songs and a makeover for the original artwork, this very special “Borknagar (25th Anniversary Re-issue 2021)” edition comes with plenty of rare and previously unheard bonus material (Among others an instrumental live studio session, alternate mixes and even rehearsal tracks), making it the definitive version of a pioneering Norwegian Metal classic!
